- Give an example of using commas to separate a clause or phrase, e.g. a frontal adverbial
- Give an example of using commas to separate items in a list or several words in a description
- Give an example of using commas to indicate a grammatical break E.g. After the door slammed, the class sat in total silence
- Use ‘and’, ‘but’ and ‘or’ to write compound sentences E.g. Whether or not the cat was clumsy, the owner was there or she was very close
- Use other conjunctions to create complex sentences with subordinate clauses E.g. She could not believe him, although he was very persuasive
- Correctly identify main and subordinate clauses
