What the learner needs to know, understand or be able to do

The learner will:

  1. Add two single digit whole numbers.

  2. Subtract a whole number up to 20 from another.

What the learner need to demonstrate in order to meet the learning outcome

The learner can:

    • Calculate a total amount by adding groups of everyday objects e.g six plates and seven bowls
    • Show understanding of the addition symbol (+) in a written calculation
    • Use keywords such as add, addition, total, altogether
    • Calculate a total amount by subtracting groups of everyday objects less than 20 e.g 17 pencils - eight pencils
    • Show understanding of the subtraction symbol (-) in a written calculation
    • Use keywords such as takeaway, subtract, less than to describe a calculation
