The learner will:
Be able to show understanding of an interesting news article by recalling details and using clarification questioning when needed.

Assessment criteria
What the learner need to demonstrate in order to meet the learning outcome
The learner can:
- Understand clarification questioning E.g What does that word mean? Can you read that part again? Can you explain that in an easier way?
- Listen to the news article as it is read out by the teacher and use the clarification questions when needed
- Recall details of the news article and also show understanding by answering some questions about the article
- Think of some ideas based on the big question presented at the end of the news article E.g Should people buy presents for their pets?
- Listen to the examples of points of view 'for' the debate E.g I want her to be included at Christmas because I would feel mean leaving her out
- Listen to the examples of points of views 'against' the debate E.g With so many children in poverty especially at Christmas, spending money on an animal that has no way of appreciating it is so wasteful
- Plan what they would like to say by making notes of their own points of view
